Coin Details
Description
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Silver Medal features the nineteenth president on a one-ounce .999 fine silver medal with matte finish. Hayes's obverse portrait was designed by George T. Morgan, reproducing the historic bronze presidential medal. The reverse displays John Reich's "Peace and Friendship" clasped hands design. Hayes won the most disputed election in American history in 1876, ultimately decided by a special Electoral Commission. His inauguration took place privately on March 3, 1877 — a Saturday — because the official date of March 4 fell on a Sunday. Hayes served a single term (1877-1881), during which he ended Reconstruction, reformed the civil service system, and vetoed the Bland-Allison Act requiring silver coinage. This silver medal was released in February 2024 at $75 from the San Francisco Mint.
