Coin Details
Description
The James A. Garfield Presidential Silver Medal honors the twentieth president on a one-ounce .999 fine silver medal with matte finish. Garfield's obverse portrait was designed by Charles E. Barber, reproducing the historic bronze presidential medal. The reverse features John Reich's "Peace and Friendship" clasped hands design. Garfield served as president for just 200 days in 1881 before being assassinated by Charles Guiteau at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington. He lingered for 80 days after being shot, finally dying on September 19, 1881 in Elberon, New Jersey. His death galvanized support for civil service reform, leading to the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883. This silver medal was released in April 2024 at $75.
