Description
The 2021 (W) Silver Eagle - Heraldic Eagle is a Silver Eagle produced at the West Point Mint as part of the American Silver Eagles 1986 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 13 million examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty striding confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the American flag, carrying branches of laurel and oak symbolizing civil and military glory — Adolph Weinman's iconic design adapted from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle behind a shield, designed by John M. Mercanti — the most reproduced coin image in history (1986-2020) or an eagle in flight carrying an oak branch, the redesigned reverse by Emily Damstra introduced in 2021 (2021+). Both Type 1 (Mercanti heraldic eagle) and Type 2 (Damstra flying eagle) reverses were produced, creating the first major design change in 35 years. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Auction record: $2,900 MS70 02-21-2023 eBay. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 31.1 grams, 40.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #837645.
