The obverse features the Statue of Liberty with a geared background representing innovation and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring innovations and innovators from each state and territory. This coin honors H. Joseph Gerber's 1945 invention of the Gerber Variable Scale, which revolutionized graphic design, engineering, and manufacturing by enabling precise proportional scaling. Connecticut (the Gerber variable scale), Massachusetts (the telephone — Alexander Graham Bell), Maryland (the Hubble Space Telescope), and South Carolina (Septima Poinsette Clark's citizenship schools and the civil rights movement). As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $15. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #826055.
