The obverse features the Statue of Liberty with a geared background representing innovation and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring innovations and innovators from each state and territory. This coin commemorates the research conducted in Pennsylvania that led to the development of the polio vaccine in 1953, saving millions of lives worldwide. The reverse depicts the poliovirus at three levels of magnification. First year of state-by-state releases honoring Delaware (classifying the stars — Annie Jump Cannon), Pennsylvania (polio vaccine — Jonas Salk), New Jersey (the light bulb — Thomas Edison), and Georgia (the Trustees' Garden, America's first agricultural experimental garden). As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $15.
