Description
The 2018 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Reverse Proof 50th Anniversary Set is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The U.S. Mint sold 199,116 of the 2018 Silver Reverse Proof sets, each containing one of these nickels. The obverse shows Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson in a three-quarter view, introduced in 2006 as the first U.S. circulating coin portrait of a president facing forward, and the reverse shows Felix Schlag's Monticello, restored by John Mercanti. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a reverse proof, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared planchets with the proof finishes reversed: frosted fields and mirror-like design elements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #679895.
