Description
The 2018 (P) Burnished Cumberland Island National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. With a mintage of 14,153, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only 10% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites — struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts a snowy egret at the edge of a salt marsh. Cumberland Island is Georgia's largest barrier island, featuring maritime forests, pristine beaches, Carnegie-era mansion ruins, and wild horses that have roamed for centuries. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $224 SP70 01-31-2019 eBay. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 155.5 grams, 76.2 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #682766.
