Third cataloged spiked head for the 2018 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, SKH-1c-2018D-03 adds another D-mint entry to the overwhelmingly Philadelphia-dominated spiked head catalog. Denver's smaller representation does not indicate superior die longevity — rather, it reflects the geographic distribution of variety collectors and submission patterns to Cuds on Coins. Both mints operate under identical specifications: the same master hub creates working hubs, which create working dies, and the steel composition and heat treatment are standardized across facilities. When a Denver die cracks at the portrait-rim junction, it produces a raised spike indistinguishable in mechanism from a Philadelphia example — only the D mintmark below the date differentiates the source. Three documented spiked heads for 2018-D represents a fraction of the total that likely existed, since Denver's cent production runs into the billions and the ratio of cracked dies to total dies should be comparable across mints.
