Description

The 2016 (S) Proof Harpers Ferry NP-Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 479,657 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 25 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts John Brown's Fort, the armory fire engine house from his 1859 raid. Harpers Ferry sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and witnessed pivotal events including the largest Civil War surrender of Federal troops. Shawnee (IL), Cumberland Gap (KY), Harpers Ferry (WV), Theodore Roosevelt (ND), and Fort Moultrie (SC) were released. The Harpers Ferry design depicting John Brown's Fort was historically significant. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $50 PR70DCAM 12-14-2020 eBay. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #597062.
