Description

As the first cataloged spiked head from the 2016 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, SKH-1c-2016D-01 opens a sequence that would grow to include at least four distinct varieties from this single date-and-mint combination. The presence of multiple spiked heads from the same production year at Denver reflects the sheer volume of dies consumed during annual cent production: each working die strikes tens of thousands of coins before retirement, and when a facility produces billions of cents in a calendar year, the die population is large enough that several independent portrait-area cracks can develop across different dies. The 2016-D cent continues the Lincoln Shield reverse design introduced in 2010, and the obverse portrait—the same Victor David Brenner design used since 1909, with minor modifications over the decades—remains the canvas on which spiked head cracks manifest.
