About This Coin

The 2016 American Buffalo Gold Fifty Dollar is a United States dollar from the American Buffalo Gold 2006 to Date series. The obverse features a composite Native American portrait combining features of three real tribal chiefs — Iron Tail (Lakota), Two Moons (Cheyenne), and John Big Tree (Seneca) — James Earle Fraser's iconic 1913 design faithfully reproduced in gold, while the reverse displays an American bison (often called Black Diamond after the famous bison at the Bronx Zoo) standing on a mound, also from Fraser's original design. Designed by James Earle Fraser. Struck in 99.99% gold, weighing 31.11 grams, 32.7 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The American Buffalo Gold Coin, introduced in 2006, was the first .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint. The design directly reproduces James Earle Fraser's classic 1913 Buffalo Nickel, bringing one of America's most beloved designs to a pure gold format. The purest gold coin in the U.S. bullion program. The 2008 fractional set (1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz) was produced for only one year. Proof versions feature deep cameo finishes.
