About This Coin
The 2008 American Buffalo Gold is a United States gold coin from the American Buffalo Gold 2006 to Date series. In 2008 the West Point Mint struck one-ounce bullion coins and, for collectors, burnished and proof coins in four sizes from a tenth ounce to one ounce. The obverse features James Earle Fraser's Native American portrait from the 1913 Buffalo nickel, which Fraser said combined the features of three chiefs, Iron Tail, Two Moons and Big Tree, and the reverse displays his American bison standing on a mound. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck in 99.99% gold, with a reeded edge. Designed by James Earle Fraser.
