Description

The Jacqueline Kennedy bronze medal honors one of the most iconic First Ladies in American history, a woman whose style, cultural vision, and dignified composure during tragedy left an indelible mark on the American presidency. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy was a multilingual debutante educated at Vassar, the Sorbonne, and George Washington University before marrying Senator John F. Kennedy in 1953. The obverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, presents a portrait capturing the elegance and poise that made her a global celebrity and fashion icon. As First Lady from 1961 to 1963, she undertook a historic restoration of the White House, filling the executive mansion with museum-quality American furnishings and art. Her televised tour of the restored White House in February 1962 was watched by more than eighty million Americans. The reverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, references her dedication to the preservation and celebration of American arts, culture, and history in the White House. The medal's issuance coincided with continued strong public fascination with the Kennedy era. Jacqueline Kennedy's composure during President Kennedy's assassination and funeral procession in November 1963 became a defining image of dignity under unimaginable grief. She later married Aristotle Onassis in 1968, pursued a career in book editing, and championed architectural preservation in New York City until her death in 1994. Struck in bronze at 1-5/16 inches.
