Description

The Dolley Madison bronze medal celebrates one of the most popular and influential First Ladies in American history. The obverse portrait, designed by Don Everhart, depicts Dolley Payne Todd Madison, who served as unofficial hostess for the widowed Thomas Jefferson before becoming First Lady herself during her husband James Madison's presidency from 1809 to 1817. Dolley Madison essentially defined the social role of the First Lady through her legendary hospitality and political skill, hosting elaborate Wednesday evening receptions known as "squeezes" that brought together politicians from opposing factions. Her most famous act came during the War of 1812 when, as British troops advanced on Washington in August 1814, she secured the iconic Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington and important state documents before fleeing the White House. The reverse design, by Don Everhart, depicts Dolley Madison saving the Washington portrait, immortalizing her courage during the burning of the capital. Struck in bronze at the standard 1-5/16 inch diameter, the medal reproduces the artistry of the companion gold coin. Dolley Madison remained a fixture of Washington society long after leaving the White House, and her enduring popularity is reflected in strong collector interest in this issue.

Rarity Notes

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint without a stated mintage limit. The Dolley Madison medal has been among the more popular issues in the bronze series, reflecting her wide name recognition and compelling historical story.
