Coin Details
Description
The Elizabeth Monroe bronze medal honors a First Lady whose time in Europe profoundly shaped both her personal refinement and her approach to the role. Elizabeth Kortright Monroe accompanied her husband James Monroe during his diplomatic postings to France, where she personally visited Adrienne de Lafayette in prison during the Reign of Terror, an act of courage that saved Madame Lafayette's life. The obverse, designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart, presents a portrait of Elizabeth Monroe reflecting the Continental elegance she brought to the White House beginning in 1817. Unlike her predecessor Dolley Madison, Elizabeth Monroe adopted a more formal and reserved social style modeled on European court etiquette, which provoked criticism from Washington society accustomed to Dolley's open hospitality. The reverse, designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles Vickers, illustrates a scene highlighting her courageous intervention in France. Struck in bronze at 1-5/16 inches, the medal reproduces the designs of the companion gold coin. Elizabeth Monroe's health declined during the presidency, and her daughter Eliza Monroe Hay increasingly assumed hostess duties, establishing a precedent for family members serving in the First Lady's social role.
