Description
This one-ounce silver Washington Diplomatic Medal, produced circa 2013, reproduces one of the earliest official medal designs of the United States Mint. The original Washington Diplomatic Medal was conceived in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State, as a gift for departing foreign diplomats — a practice that replaced the expensive gold snuffboxes traditionally given by European monarchies. The obverse features George Washington in profile, while the reverse displays the Great Seal of the United States. This one-ounce silver version makes the historic design accessible to collectors at a more affordable price point than the gold versions. The Washington Diplomatic Medal holds a unique place in American numismatic history as the first medal officially authorized and produced by the United States government.
Rarity Notes
One-ounce silver, limited U.S. Mint production. More available than gold versions. Sold through U.S. Mint and secondary market.
