Description

The 2011 (S) Proof United States Army Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Half Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 68,332 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 63% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $144 PR70 06-30-2013 eBay. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #506165.
