Description

Following immediately after SKH-1c-2010-07, this eighth cataloged spiked head for the 2010-P Shield Cent is cross-referenced as JCc-2010_019 in the Jim Caldwell catalog — one sequential number beyond entry 07's JCc-2010_018, suggesting these varieties may have been discovered in close succession. Both appear on the first-year Shield Cent from Philadelphia, but each originates from a different working die whose unique surface damage created a distinct spike projection near Lincoln's portrait. The consistency of consecutive Caldwell numbers alongside consecutive Cuds on Coins numbers hints at a systematic search effort during focused examination of 2010-P cent production. Die gouges capable of producing spiked heads are particularly common on high-relief areas of the die — Lincoln's hair, hat brim, and bust truncation receive the greatest striking pressure, making them vulnerable to micro-fractures that chip the die surface.
