PC-100c-2009P-01 Pre-Cud

Description

Struck in Position B — one of two edge-lettering die orientations used for Presidential Dollars — this pre-cud on the 2009 Philadelphia William Henry Harrison Dollar documents an early-stage rim fracture before it progressed to a full cud. Pre-cuds appear as raised lines or ridges near the rim rather than the featureless blob of a complete cud, capturing the transitional moment when a die crack has weakened the rim but the fractured piece has not yet separated from the die face. Presidential Dollars employed a distinctive edge-lettering collar that imprinted the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM on the coin's edge, with Position A and Position B denoting the two possible orientations of that lettering relative to the obverse. This Position B specimen pairs the Harrison portrait obverse with the specific edge orientation where the lettering reads in a particular direction when the obverse faces the viewer. William Henry Harrison, the ninth President, served the shortest term in American history — just 31 days in 1841 before succumbing to pneumonia.
