Description

The 2008 (S) Proof Bald Eagle Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Half Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 220,577 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 65% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $348 PR70DCAM 02-15-2018 eBay. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #394417.
