Coin Details
Description
This 38mm bronze medal honors the Yankton Sioux Tribe Code Talkers, members of the Ihanktonwan Dakota people who served the United States military by employing their native Dakota language for secure battlefield communications. The Yankton Sioux, based in southeastern South Dakota along the Missouri River, are part of the broader Sioux Nation whose members contributed code talkers from multiple bands and tribes. This medal is part of the comprehensive Code Talkers recognition program that honored every tribe known to have provided code talker service. The obverse features a design created in collaboration with the Yankton Sioux Tribe, incorporating imagery and symbols that reflect the tribe's cultural identity and the dual heritage of its code talker veterans — proud warriors in both the Native American and U.S. military traditions. The Dakota language used by Yankton Sioux code talkers presented particular challenges for enemy cryptanalysts due to its tonal qualities, complex verb conjugations, and the virtual impossibility of finding non-Native speakers who could serve as translators for opposing forces. The reverse carries program inscriptions and the Yankton Sioux Tribe identification. The code talkers' contributions were recognized through a tiered medal system: a single Congressional Gold Medal was presented to each participating tribe, while individual bronze duplicate medals in the 38mm format were produced by the U.S. Mint for public sale, allowing collectors and supporters to own a tangible tribute to this remarkable chapter in American military and Native American history.
