Description

Sharing the same Cuds on Coins catalog number CU-100c-2007P-02R as its Position A counterpart, this cud error appears on the 2007 (P) Presidential Dollar honoring James Madison but struck in Position B — a fundamentally different coin despite the identical catalog designation. Position B means the edge lettering reads normally when the reverse (Statue of Liberty side) faces upward, the opposite orientation from Position A. This distinction arises because Presidential Dollar planchets receive edge lettering in a separate operation after striking, and the coin can enter the machine in either orientation, producing two valid positions. The cud itself — a raised, featureless area of displaced metal along the rim where a broken die segment left a void — is the same type of dramatic die failure, but Position B coins represent a different subset of the mintage. Collectors tracking Presidential Dollar cuds must note edge-lettering orientation to distinguish Position A from Position B specimens, as two otherwise identical coins with different edge positions constitute separate collectible varieties within the series that debuted in 2007 at the Philadelphia Mint.
