Description

The 2006 (D) Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel is a special strike nickel struck at the Denver Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The Denver Mint struck 847,361 satin-finish nickels dated 2006. The obverse shows Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson in a three-quarter view, introduced in 2006 as the first U.S. circulating coin portrait of a president facing forward, and the reverse shows Felix Schlag's Monticello, restored by John Mercanti. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.21 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94163.
