Description

The 2004 (S) Proof Michigan State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 2,740,684 proof Michigan quarters dated 2004. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features an outline of the Great Lakes system with the state outline highlighted, representing Michigan's unique position as a peninsula state bordered by four of the five Great Lakes, with more freshwater coastline than any other state. The 2004 quarters honored, in release order, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Two 2004-D Wisconsin varieties show an extra leaf on the corn stalk, one high and one low. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $25 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913047.
