Description

The 2002 (P) Louisiana State Quarter represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 362,000,000 Louisiana quarters dated 2002. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features the brown pelican (state bird), an outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory, and a trumpet, with the inscription "Louisiana Purchase." The design honors both the 1803 land acquisition that doubled the size of the United States and Louisiana's jazz tradition. The 2002 quarters honored, in release order, Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi. Strong collector participation continued. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $2 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
