About This Coin

The 2001 Sacagawea Dollar is a United States dollar from the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series — the second year of the series. In 2001, coins were struck at the San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Denver Mints with a combined mintage of 136.6 million. This ranks 21st of 25 years by total mintage, above the series median of 10.8 million. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste Crapeau on her back and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring Native American contributions to the United States. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle encircled by 17 stars representing the states in the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This original Sacagawea dollar design was used from 2000 through 2008. Second year of production. Mintages declined as public rejection of the golden dollar became apparent. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $1 to $12 depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $5.8K in MS64 grade at Heritage Auctions. Designed by Glenna Goodacre/Thomas D. Rogers Sr..
