Description

The 2001 (S) Proof Rhode Island State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.1 million examples, making this ranked 6th of 20 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse depicts a vintage sailboat gliding across Narragansett Bay with the Pell Bridge in the background and the inscription "The Ocean State." The design celebrates Rhode Island's deep maritime heritage. New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Kentucky. Proof and silver proof sets became major revenue sources for the Mint. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $30 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913021.
