Description

Rhode Island's State Quarter reverse — depicting a vintage sailboat gliding through Narragansett Bay with the Pell Bridge visible in the background — suffered a die rim failure that produced this cud error, the third documented reverse cud for the 2001-P Rhode Island issue. Cataloged as CU-25c-2001P-03R(RI) by Cuds on Coins, the "R" suffix confirms the break occurred on the reverse die, meaning the cud's raised featureless mass appears on the same side as Daniel Carr's sailboat design. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates, creating a cavity that fills with metal during striking. Rhode Island was the thirteenth state admitted to the Union and the thirteenth quarter released in the 50 State Quarters program, struck in 2001.
