2000 (P) Massachusetts State Quarter - SKH-25c-2000P-01(MA) Spiked Head

Description

On the 2000-P Massachusetts State Quarter, SKH-25c-2000P-01(MA) documents a die gouge near Washington's portrait in the 50 State Quarters Program. Massachusetts was the sixth state honored, released in 2000 alongside Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and New Hampshire. The reverse features the Minute Man statue at Concord, commemorating the colony's role in the American Revolution, while the obverse carries the modified John Flanagan portrait used across all fifty designs. Spiked heads on State Quarters attracted considerable attention during the program's peak years, when an estimated 140 million Americans were actively collecting designs from circulation. That massive audience meant even casual collectors noticed unusual projections from Washington's bust, driving a wave of variety submissions to attribution services. Philadelphia's enormous production runs for each new design required rapid die turnover, increasing opportunities for surface damage. Copper-nickel clad composition. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
