1997 (P) Roosevelt Dime - CU-10c-1997P-01R Rim Cud

Description

Documented by the Cuds on Coins research team, this 1997 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime displays a rim cud on the reverse — the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. Cuds are classified according to their location on the coin — obverse or reverse — and their size relative to the rim, with larger cuds generally commanding greater collector interest. The CU-10c-1997P-01R designation identifies this as the first documented reverse rim cud for the 1997 Philadelphia Mint dime. Unlike interior die breaks that produce raised lumps within the design area, rim cuds create a distinctive raised interruption in the design rim that follows its curve, making them immediately identifiable even without magnification in many cases.
