Description
The 1996 (P) Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games High Jump Proof Dollar is a proof cent struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 124,502 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 88% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, authorized by Congress to honor significant American events, people, and institutions and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $14,950 PR70 10-06-2011 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9731.
