Description

The 1994 (W) U.S. Prisoner of War Commemorative Dollar was struck at the West Point Mint as a dollar in the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 54,790 examples, making this the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, authorized by Congress to honor significant American events, people, and institutions and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Coined at the West Point Mint, which transitioned from bullion depository to a dedicated production facility for commemorative and investment-grade coins. Auction record: $5,175 MS67 06-26-2008 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9690.
