Description
First of the rim cuds documented for the 1993 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, where part of the die's rim gutter was lost under repeated striking stress, leaving a raised interruption in the design rim, following its curve, on subsequently struck coins. Philadelphia's 1993 quarter production ran to approximately 639 million pieces, subjecting each die pair to millions of high-pressure strikes during its service life. The rim zone concentrates stress because the die's collar, planchet edge, and striking force all converge at the periphery, making it the most common site for major fractures. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins within the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series, with no additional cross-reference numbers from other attribution organizations.
