Description
The 1993 Dala commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Overthrow is one of the most historically significant modern Hawaiian numismatic pieces. Struck on the centennial of the January 17, 1893 overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani, this silver Dala addresses one of the most painful and politically charged events in Hawaiian history. The overthrow was orchestrated by the Committee of Safety, a group of American and European businessmen and sugar planters who were supported by U.S. Minister John L. Stevens and the landing of U.S. Marines from the USS Boston. The centennial in 1993 coincided with a formal U.S. government apology: Public Law 103-150, the Apology Resolution, signed by President Clinton on November 23, 1993, acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow and apologized to Native Hawaiians. This commemorative, cataloged as Krause X-MB83, captures a moment of historical reckoning. The piece would have been produced during a year of intense public discussion about Hawaiian sovereignty, Native Hawaiian rights, and the legacy of American colonialism in the Pacific.
