Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins and cataloged on December 19, 2018, this rim cud on a 1993-D Washington Quarter is the first (and at the time of cataloging, possibly only) cud recorded for this date-mint combination. The "01" designation confirms its premiere position in the 1993-D quarter cud census. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The location of the cud on the coin — whether it runs alongside lettering or a design element, or along an otherwise blank stretch of rim — determines both its visual impact and its collectability, with cuds that sit next to design elements generally commanding more attention from error collectors. The 1993-D Washington Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-nickel clad composition at the standard quarter specifications of 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. John Flanagan's classic Washington portrait obverse and heraldic eagle reverse, in production since 1932, provide the design context for this die break variety. No additional cross-references are known. Denver's 1993 quarter production operated at high volume to meet commercial demand, and the working dies endured the mechanical stress of striking millions of clad planchets — conditions that inevitably produce occasional rim fractures documented by varieties like CU-25c-1993D-01.
