Description
The 1992 (D) Columbus Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Denver Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 106,649 examples. Authorized to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, this dollar was part of a three-coin program issued in 1992. The obverse features a full figure of Christopher Columbus holding a banner with a globe behind him, ships and land in the background, while the reverse displays a split image with the Santa Maria at sea on the left half and the Space Shuttle Discovery on the right, representing 500 years of exploration progress. Designed by T. James Ferrell/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9664. The Columbus Quincentenary dollar's split-scene reverse is one of the most creative compositions in the modern commemorative series, bridging five centuries of exploration.
