Description
The 1992 (D) Columbus Dollar is a commemorative dollar struck at the Denver Mint. The Denver Mint struck 106,949 uncirculated Christopher Columbus Quincentenary dollars dated 1992. Authorized to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, this dollar was part of a three-coin program issued in 1992. The obverse features a full figure of Christopher Columbus holding a banner with a globe behind him, ships and land in the background, while the reverse displays a split image with the Santa Maria at sea on the left half and the Space Shuttle Discovery on the right, representing 500 years of exploration progress. Designed by John M. Mercanti/Thomas D. Rogers. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9664.
