Description

The 1991-RHM (Royal Hawaiian Mint) 1/10 ounce gold Liliuokalani commemorative, Krause X#MB65, honors Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917), the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Despite the PCGS-listed weight of 31.1 grams, the Krause designation and fractional ounce description suggest this is a 1/10 ounce gold piece; the weight data may reflect a catalog error. Liliuokalani ascended to the throne in 1891 following the death of her brother, King Kalakaua. Her reign was marked by an attempt to restore royal authority through a new constitution, which provoked the Committee of Safety (composed largely of American and European sugar planters and businessmen) to overthrow her government on January 17, 1893. Despite appeals to President Grover Cleveland, who acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow, Liliuokalani was never restored to power. The Royal Hawaiian Mint (RHM) was a successor or rebranding of the original Hawaiian Mint (THM), continuing the production of Hawaiian-themed commemorative pieces in precious metals. The RHM mintmark distinguishes these later productions from the earlier THM issues.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Gold issues from the Royal Hawaiian Mint had very limited production, 50-200 pieces for 1/10 ounce gold.
