Description

This 1990 Jesse Owens medal at 1.5 inches diameter honors one of the greatest athletes in American history. James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens achieved immortality at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, winning four gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay — all under the watchful eye of Adolf Hitler, whose theories of Aryan racial superiority were spectacularly refuted by Owens' dominance. The 1.5-inch format (approximately 38mm) is a standard small commemorative medal size suitable for display or desk presentation. Owens' achievements transcended athletics — his victories in Berlin became one of the most powerful symbolic repudiations of racism in the twentieth century, and his legacy as both an athlete and a symbol of human equality has only grown over time. Congress posthumously awarded Owens the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990, and this U.S. Mint medal was produced in connection with that honor.
