Description
This silver medal, cataloged as J-CM-5, is attributed to John Reich, the German-born engraver who served as Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint from 1807 to 1817. Reich's design for this 1783-dated American Revolution medal reflects his sophisticated European training and his mastery of the neoclassical style that defined early American numismatic art. The silver composition indicates this was a premium version produced in limited quantities. Reich was responsible for many of the most important early American coin designs, including the Capped Bust series for half dollars, dimes, and other denominations. His medal work is less well known but equally accomplished, demonstrating the skill that made him one of the most important figures in the formative years of American die-engraving. The J-CM-5 catalog number places this within the Julian Commemorative Medal reference, documenting one of the earliest medals struck at the U.S. Mint by one of its most talented artisans.
