(1783) Silver Medal J-CM-6, John Reich
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silver medal, cataloged as J-CM-6, is another John Reich design commemorating the American Revolution with a 1783 date. The companion piece to J-CM-5 (PCGS #518702), this medal features a different design within the same Revolutionary commemorative theme, demonstrating Reich's versatility as a medallic artist. The silver composition places this among the premium strikings, produced in very small numbers at the Philadelphia Mint. Reich's medal work at the U.S. Mint represented the highest standard of die-engraving available in early American numismatics, and his pieces are studied as examples of the neoclassical style adapted for American national subjects. The distinction between J-CM-5 and J-CM-6 lies in design elements rather than composition, with each number representing a unique die combination within the Sansom/Revolution medal family. Reich's contributions to American numismatic art extended well beyond his relatively brief tenure at the Mint, influencing the aesthetic direction of American coinage for decades.
