Second documented retained cud for the 1983 Philadelphia Mint Washington Quarter, this variety preserves a reverse die rim fracture where the broken section remained attached to the die rather than separating to form a full cud. The "R" suffix identifies this as a reverse die break, affecting the heraldic eagle design that appeared on Washington Quarters from 1932 through 1998. Retained cuds produce a visible crack line with subtle displacement, distinct from full cuds where the separated die piece leaves a cavity that fills with metal to create a raised featureless mass.
