Third typical die clash documented for the 1983 Jefferson nickel, TDC-5C-1983-03 preserves transferred design impressions from an unprotected contact between obverse and reverse dies during a strike cycle that fired without a planchet between them. When the press closes on empty air, the raised elements of each die hammer directly into the opposing die face, leaving incuse ghost images of each side's design embedded in the other.
