Description
CU-1C-1982-51 is a rim cud on the Zinc Large Date subtype, recording a peripheral die fracture. The back-to-back occurrence of two rim cuds at positions 50 and 51 — both on the same subtype and both confined to the die's outer margin — raises the intriguing possibility that these discoveries emerged from a closely related search, perhaps even from the same source of unsorted 1982 zinc cents. Rim cuds can be challenging to authenticate because their narrow, edge-confined geometry sometimes mimics other forms of rim disturbance, including retained die caps, struck-through errors affecting the rim area, and simple mechanical damage from coin-counting machines. The diagnostic key is the flat, shelf-like cross-section of the raised metal: genuine cuds produce a plateau with a clean leading edge where the fracture boundary meets the intact die surface, a feature that post-strike damage cannot replicate. This 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc cent belongs to the post-transition production stream at Philadelphia, struck from a Large Date die. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
