Description
Marking the fiftieth entry in the overall 1982 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1982-50 is a rim cud on the Zinc Large Date subtype. Fifty distinct die rim fractures, each confirmed as geometrically unique, represent a sample size large enough to support meaningful statistical analysis of die failure patterns. Researchers studying cud distribution across the four 1982-P subtypes can examine whether certain angular positions on the die rim are more prone to fracture than others — a finding that could reveal asymmetric stress concentrations caused by the collar design, die mounting alignment, or press frame geometry. As a rim cud, CU-50 records the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the struck coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. This cent was struck from the 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc planchet that became the Lincoln cent standard after the mid-1982 composition change. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
