Description

Reaching census number seventy-one, CU-1c-1982-71(SD) documents an interior cud on the 1982 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent struck on the copper-plated zinc planchet with the compact small date numerals. At 2.5 grams, this post-transition specimen carries a die break where a fragment of the obverse die separated completely from the die face, leaving a raised featureless plateau on the struck coin that displaces whatever design element occupied that region. Small Date cuds in the seventies of the census represent an uncommonly deep documentation level for this subtype, since the small date punch saw more limited deployment at the Philadelphia Mint than its large date counterpart, and correspondingly fewer dies carried this date configuration. The copper-plated zinc planchet fills the fractured die void with layered material — a thin copper shell over a zinc core — whose surface presents the familiar copper tone of a Lincoln cent while concealing the lighter-density substrate beneath. Each new Small Date cud at this census depth must be carefully differentiated from all previously cataloged entries through positional overlay analysis and die marker comparison.
