Description
Sharing the CU-1c-1982-05(LD) designation with its bronze counterpart, this rim cud appears on the Zinc Large Date subtype — the 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc planchet paired with the wider date numerals. As a rim cud, this variety records the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The existence of this entry alongside its bronze twin under a single census number provides a direct comparison of how the same die failure appears on two different planchet materials: the zinc-core planchet, being softer and less dense than the bronze alloy, may yield a slightly more rounded or less crisply defined cud profile at the fracture boundary, though the difference is often subtle enough to require careful examination under magnification. The 2.5-gram weight and large date numerals place this cent firmly in Philadelphia's post-transition zinc production phase, when the lighter planchet had become the standard.
