Description

The 1982 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Small Date Bronze is a Denver Mint error: a cent from the new Small Date obverse die struck on a leftover 95% copper, 5% zinc planchet after the Mint had moved to copper-plated zinc. A Minnesota collector found the first example in circulation in November 2016, and NGC certified it as the discovery coin in February 2017; NGC confirmed a second example in 2019. Both are graded NGC AU-58 BN and weigh 3.08 grams, within the tolerance for the 3.11-gram copper-alloy cent. NGC classes them as Mint errors on leftover planchets rather than as an eighth 1982 circulation variety. The discovery coin sold for $18,800 at Stack's Bowers Galleries in August 2017. The obverse features Abraham Lincoln facing right and the reverse displays the Lincoln Memorial building in Washington, D.C. Struck in 95% copper, 5% zinc, 19.05 mm in diameter, with a plain edge.
