CU-100c-1979S-04 Rim Cud

Description

The fourth documented cud for the 1979-S date, CU-100c-1979S-04 from CudsOnCoins records another die rim fracture on this San Francisco Susan B. Anthony Dollar. Die rim breaks are mechanical failures caused by cumulative stress from repeated high-pressure strikes, and their frequency correlates with both production volume and die steel quality. The SBA Dollar was conceived as a practical replacement for the Eisenhower Dollar, reducing size and weight to facilitate vending machine use, but its near-quarter dimensions generated widespread public confusion. Frank Gasparro's obverse honored Susan B. Anthony, whose decades of activism were instrumental in the Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote. The reverse eagle-landing design, adapted from the Eisenhower Dollar, maintained continuity between the two denominations. San Francisco struck both business strikes and proof SBA Dollars in 1979, and die stress affected both production types. Four documented cuds for the 1979-S business strike indicate that rim failures were not uncommon during the intensive early production of this new denomination.
