Description
The 1979 (S) Proof Susan B. Anthony Dollar - Type 1 is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979-1999 series. With a mintage of 3.7 million, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 6 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Susan B. Anthony facing right, the first woman depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon, adapted from the Apollo 11 mission patch. First year of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar — the first circulating U.S. coin to depict a real woman. The 1979-P Wide Rim (Near Date) variety is scarcer than the standard Narrow Rim. Public rejection was immediate due to confusion with the quarter. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $69. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99589.
