Description
The 1978 (D) Eisenhower Dollar represents a Denver Mint issue from the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. With a mintage of 33.0 million, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 56% of production. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. The final year of the Eisenhower Dollar before the smaller Susan B. Anthony Dollar replaced it in 1979. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $7 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 22.7 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
